Japan, Northern Mariana Islands - Tropical Cyclone NEOGURI and BUALOI (ECHO 21 Oct 2019)Mon, 21 Oct 2019 13:02

  • Tropical Cyclone NEOGURI continued north-east over the northern Philippine Sea towards central Honshu, Japan with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h.
  • NEOGURI is expected to pass close to the southern greater Tokyo area on 22 October, with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h. The area was also hit by Typhoon HAGIBIS on 11-12 October, resulting in 74 deaths.
  • Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a red warning for heavy rain over Mie Prefecture on Honshu island and heavy rain and strong winds will affect most of the island 21-23 October. 
  • Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone BUALOI continued north-west over the Philippine Sea towards the Northern Mariana Islands. On 21 October at 0.00 its centre was approximately 280 km south-east of Saipan, with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h. Media report the closure of schools and government offices on 21 October.
  • BUALOI should pass north of Saipan on 21 October, with maximum sustained winds up to 175 km/h. Heavy rain warnings and flash flood alerts have been issued for the Northern Mariana islands.
